Four hours later, I woke up in my bed alone. A part of me still ached with the boy’s absence but knowing that the bond I had with the three of them was weakening I knew it was because I genuinely missed them. Shit. Rolling out of bed, I threw on a clean pair of shorts and a tank top and went downstairs to check my phone. Only one message from Al:

Claire wants to stay here for at least a week so she can have some time to learn how her magic has grown. Will let you know if that gets extended or not. Take care. Al.

For being suspended since she was a child, she had a good head on her shoulders. It was best for her to experiment in Hell’s Plane rather than earth. Shoving my phone in my pocket, I headed for the basement stairs. It was colder than normal in this part of the house, and I felt my magic amp up because of it. There were no scores this time that appeared, but it was obvious that less of it was being contained. If it ended up mattering, I’d have to figure out what caused the bonds to weaken.

Flipping on the lights as I hit the last step, I looked around. From here I could sense someone that felt sort of like an Angel, but it was different somehow. They were way stronger than even an Arch Angel and they felt slightly familiar, but I couldn’t pinpoint where I knew them from. “You know that I know you’re there. Step out where I can see you.” In a way it reminded me of Cole.

“So, you’re as good as they say you are.” A guy that stood around six-four and looked to be in his mid-twenties came out of the shadows to my left. His eyes were a deep golden color, and his hair was jet black and kept in a high and tight style. There wasn’t a single thing about him that was threatening but now wasn’t the time to let my guard down.

“Who’s they?” First it was Lucas and Cole that had sought me out because of some rumors. I had begun to think it was Al they had heard them from, but it was becoming more apparent that there were others who have been watching me.

“The people that want Andre killed for the crimes he’s committed.” Normally that wouldn’t sound too bad but that wasn’t how the world of Angels and Demons worked. They only ever wanted someone dead if the puppet ran the risk of exposing the ones who were holding the strings.

“I don’t kill for money.” At least I didn’t anymore. “Why are you here if it’s Andre that you’re supposed to kill?” I was beginning to wish I had grabbed the pendant out of my kitchen drawer.

“I’m sorry.” In no more than a second his whole demeanor changed from uptight to exhaustion. “That’s not why I’m here. I need your help.” I nearly laughed.
